oh yay, i texted you about these so I'm so glad they're up and there's two! some suggestions:

in the country for "a book with a non-western setting" or "a book with a poc main character" or "a book by a diverse author" or "#ownvoices" lol

trail of lightning for "#ownvoices" or "a [fiction] book by a diverse author"

if you haven't ready any spider-woman, i recommend dennis hopeless's run for the "graphic novel" square. she's one of my all-time favorite characters.

if you like sara bareilles, I loved her memoir and highly recommend it as an audiobook as she sings her music a capella.

i read hidden figures for my non-fiction by a diverse author square last year and really liked it.

it might make your head explode but i read jeff flake's conscience of a conservative last year and that could work for "topic: history and/or politics" but honestly my all time fav political/history series is the series on LBJ by robert caro. i'm midway through the 3rd one and they're all exceptionally long and fascinating.

and lastly (omg this got so long) i rec devil in the white city for the true crime square, assuming your goodreads status for this book is correct and you haven't read it yet!

np, lmk what you think! and haha i figured something like that happened :) i'm excited they're ready so soon!

also since apparently i was too overwhelmed by how many squares 'in the country' could have filled, i didn't even explain. i really really loved that book and it revealed a lot about my own ethnic background (philippines) that i had previously been ignorant about. so if you read it, i'd love to hear what you think!!

Ooooh, I wanna do thisss.

As for recs:
Girls of Paper and Fire is actually pretty good. Kinda standard YA-fantasy fare, but the main romance is between two girls (so main character is queer), and the setting is Malaysia-based (non-Western setting) (and the main character is POC). Can also count as #ownvoices and/or diverse author, too! TW: sexual assault (but it's well-handled), so be warned on that.

I literally JUST finished Dragon Age: Knight Errant for a graphic novel rec. I suspect the main character in this one will be a companion in the next game so??? Or any of the Avatar or Legend of Korra graphic novels are a pretty damn good read, too.

The Heart's Invisible Furies is one of my favorite reads from 2018, for a queer main character. Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman is great for POC leads/#ownstories/diverse author. And I would be remiss if I didn't recommend my top read from last year The Travelling Cat Chronicles for a diverse author read! (idk if poc lead counts for this since technically the lead character is... a cat... but it takes place in Japan so non-Western setting at least?)

Yay I'm also doing these! Some suggestions:

Shrill by Lindy West is about fatphobia and is being made into a movie w/ Aidy Bryant.

Similarly, Landwhale by Jes Baker & You Have the Right To Remain Fat which could all go under Topic: Health

sooooooooo excited for this

06. A book with a queer main character
'jack of hearts (and other parts)' by lev a. c. rosen, 'i was born for this' by alice osemon or 'daughter of the burning city' by amanda foody (bi protag & demisexual love interest), or 'demon road' by derek landry.

09. A book with a disabled (mental health counts!) main character
i thiiiink i can see you really connecting with 'are we all lemmings and snowflakes?' by holly bourne if you wanted to go with mental health. otherwise, 'not if i see you first' by erik lindstrom (blind protag), 'a quiet kind of thunder' by sara barnard (deaf love interest), 'holding up the universe' by jennifer niven (Prosopagnosia)

10. Speculative fiction
i was gonna rec you scythe but i saw you read it so READ THUNDERHEAD!!!

11. A book with a POC main character
'nyxia' by scott reintgen. this book struck me because it's suuuuper rare to find a ya book where there's a male protag who is african american, and his race isn't the focus of the book. OR 'all about mia' by lisa williamson. OR 'running girl' by simon mason.

13. #ownvoices
'the state of grace' by rachael lucas (autism), 'sofia khan is not obliged' by ayisha malik (muslim)
