gif explanation of my response to one of my new favorite fantasy series Throne of Glass. This is for Kenzie. Spoilers.

Just FYI this is me in general right now and that's okay:

At the beginning:

My first impression of Celaena:

My first impression of Dorian:

My first impression of Chaol:

When Nehemia and Celaena become besties:

My disappointment there aren't enough varied females in the beginning:

My general feeling about Chaol and Celaena:

That really sad death in book two:

Celaena's response to said thing:

My response to her response:

The fact I didn't get the stuff about Aelin when I should have:

My first response to Rowan:

Celaena getting her shit together and claiming who she is:

The end of book three:

The first chapter of book four from Dorian's POV:

Chaol and Aelin fighting:

Pretty much everything about Chaol that book:

But Chaol and Dorian:

Aelin and Aedion:

Aelin and Rowan:

This is how I picture Manon:

Manon and Dorian:

Everything having to do with Lysandra:

Arobynn finally getting what's coming to him:

DORIAN COMING BACK FROM THE BRINK FOR CHAOL:

ALL OF THE WOMEN NOW IN THE SERIES HOLY SHIT:

OKAY THIS IS WHEN DEE ADDS NEW THINGS AFTER THE FIFTH BOOK CAME OUT. YOU'RE WELCOME.

AELIN DEALING WITH HER DICKISH LORD PEOPLE:

But also

Rowan having to run off to save Dorian:

As usual my feelings about Dorian:

Aelin briefly pretending to be Celaena:

Aelin and Rowan in general:

After the 100th time she says Aelin and Rowan are the best most spectacular thing of all time:

The overdone sex scenes with them:

The mate thing thus negating his past lover and basically being unnecessary:

Lysandra turning into that water dragon thing:

Seriously she is my favorite female character. I am so on board her.

Lysandra and Aedion:

Manon's entire storyline:

Her and Dorian:

Elide and Lorcan:

Elide and Manon:

I need Chaol and Dorian:

Aelin burning herself out:

The mirrors with Aelin and Manon and all the backstory:

Reminder about Nehemia:

Like a shit ton of exposition and lots of things happening in the last 50 pages:

Seriously you should've waited until the next book, end it on a cliffhanger.

Aelin having planned this whole time to give up:

Lysandra as Aelin, Rowan married her, Lorcan fucked it all up, basically it all being a disaster:

Me realizing how much she was inspired by Black Jewels and that's why it was identical in some ways:

But overall:

The next book:

I just started the series! And I'm trying to get through it, but I'm struggling a lot with the clunky writing?

Are you still on the first book? It gets loads better writing wise. I liked the first book okay but second is when I really fell in love and by the fourth I was like screaming lol. I really really love this series. Like for me, the Lunar Chronicles was good but there are a lot of things I didn't like sprinkled in with things I did like. I love everything about Throne of Glass. EVERYTHING. well maybe not chaol.

Yeah, I'm still in the early chapters of the first book, and it's a slow slog just because I am having trouble with the writing. But so far, I share your feelings on the captain of the guard dude. Stocism is only interesting when there's a hint of deeper passions and feelings underneath. So far, he's all cardboard.

Then again, the main character hasn't been entirely interesting either. I'm getting a lot of tell and not enough show.

Yeah that is definitely a problem when it first starts because she gives too much exposition. It flows a lot better once she relaxes on going HERE IS A LIST OF ALL THE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW TO CONTINUE. Book two is when she just flows into everything and things stop being tell not show. I mean I like parts of book one, but book two is when it turned into obsession. She does some REALLY FUCKED UP AND AWESOME STUFF in that one lol. So instead of her being an assassin as an informed trait, you really get to see her destroy things and be terrifying and it's fun.

Chaol is definitely the least interesting character in the series. His only redeeming trait is his genuine love and loyalty for Dorian. The Chaolaena shippers are craaaaycray too.

Ok! I will persevere, then! But man, it's not easy. I keep looking for excuses to put the book down, and...that's really not a good quality in a book.

Yeah it took a bit but I got into the groove like halfway through. The series changes SIGNIFICANTLy after book one, because it has a pretty straight forward story there, but it goes in a different direction. It's because she originally wrote the first one as a complete one-off until it started to get published and they were like MORE so she came up with a much more in depth world and overhanging arc and it ups in quality from there.

Okay! Will...slog...on...

Oh look, something shiny.

Maybe I should just read the wiki summary of book 1 and pick it up from book 2

I don't even really have a problem with that lol. I did definitely like one major thing about book one, and that's she seemed to set up the classic prince/pauper thing with Dorian and Celaena. And they flirt with it a little in book one and then they decide it's not really there (the spark) and remain friends the rest of the series. Dorian just really respects and gets her. Later on he tells Chaol that he can't just pick and choose the parts of her to love, he has to love all of her, and I really dig that about their friendship. He gets it. I appreciate she went there and then went NAH and changed directions.

Huh. That's cool. And a neat way of resolving what I presume would be some sort of love triangle.

Yeah there are moments in the second one when he's jealous/sad it couldn't work out, but he never tries to be competition and he lets it go and supports them. Every time Celaena has a new love interest there's really never a triangle exactly. Her relationship with the others are clearly over by the time she moves on. I like that.

I feel like Maas INTENTIONALLY was like no she's not going to be torn between men and do the choosing thing. No triangles. She's done with things when she's ready to move on. And actually each relationship makes complete sense as to where she is in her mind and what her wants are. I love that aspect. Plus it's not even the most important part to her. She's got a LOT OF SHIT GOING ON.

My other favorite part are how many incredible ladies there are by the end. And there's lady friendship! YAY.

I love lady friendships! That's my fave part of the Vampire Academy series.

Okay fine. I'll keep reading. I do need something to tide me over until Trials of Apollo arrives.

Me too! There's a good one in the first book of ToG, but as she goes there are a lot more stronger ones. By the fourth book the cast is mostly really badass women, which is preeeetty awesome lol. I think if you know that there's a disconnect in quality/story between the first and second it makes sense, because she wrote the first one awhile back when it was supposed to just be a complete story, and when she goes into the second it's like THE LIGHT IS SHINING DOWN I HAVE FOUND MY STORY.

Yay! Also Maas is an awesome writer in that she is FAST. You don't have to wait 500000 years like GRRM. She put Queen of Shadows (the fourth book) out in fall last year and she's already got the next book ready for this fall, AND she says she'll have the book after that ready for like spring of 2017. So she knows how to get her shit done.
